how to free up disk space on windows 10
1- hibernation files:
Hibernation saves computer power in the event that you go away from it and not use it, as it stores all your data and open applications on the hard disk.
While the (Sleep) mode saves this data in random access memory (RAM), in both cases, this mode targets the speed of returning to what you were working on on your computer.
However, Windows stores these files, which automatically consumes space on the hard drive, and if you do not rely on this mode and only rely on Sleep mode, you can free up space on the disk (C) by deleting these files and disabling the feature through these steps:
- Open (Command Prompt) from the Start menu, then run it as (Run As Administrator).
- Type this command (powercfg.exe -h off), then press Enter, and a message will appear for you to confirm that this mode is disabled, and if you want to restart (Hibernation) mode again, type the command (powercfg.exe -h) and then press Enter.
2- Windows temporary files:
The Windows Temp Files folder is not important after its first use.
It contains the files and folders inside of information that the operating system used previously and no longer needs.
Although the built-in Disk Cleanup tool can delete these files automatically, you can also delete them manually.
3- Recycle Bin:
Technically speaking, the Recycle Bin is not really a folder, as it contains the files that you delete.
Then, over time, it may contain many files, which may reach several gigabytes, occupying part of the storage space on your computer and by deleting them, you can free up some additional space.
Where you can easily delete the files inside it, by right-clicking on the (Recycle Bin) icon on the desktop and choosing (Empty Recycle Bin) from the popup menu that appears.
4- Downloaded program files:
In this folder the operating system maintains files used by the IE web browser version ActiveX controls and Java applets, so if you use the same feature on the website you don’t have to download it twice.
In fact, this folder is useless as ActiveX is a very old technology and rife with vulnerabilities, in addition to that, websites rarely use Java applications these days.
Although most users are not running the IE version of the web browser now, you should expect that you will find this folder already empty, however feel free to delete its contents if it is not.
